Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Items with weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to stronger bases. Items with strong bases, such as the Titans of eth have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or as a reward for missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

In order to upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the player must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be and also the element or material required to make that happen.

There are three kinds of universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, such as gems, can be placed on any type of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that are subject to a type restriction. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They offer the same benefits as jewels, however they cannot be used with any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix at the end of item names. For example adding a Glyph will transform the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades to gather tools If a player replaces one glyph with a different one, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, excluding inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from the previous versions in a few key ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they are "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, however the materials needed do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.

This process can take up to two hours, and costs the same amount of materials. However, it has a lower chance of success.
