Because mesothelioma is a chronic disease with a long latency period patients may be diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma decades after their initial exposure.

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms can appear similar to other conditions and can be mistaken for hernias, digestive issues such as colitis or Crohn's disease, or other forms of abdominal cancer. This is why many patients don't report their exposure to asbestos and they do not seek medical treatment. Doctors may suggest a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A biopsy involves the removal of the smallest piece of tissue that is examined. This procedure will reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as whether it is epithelioid sarcomatoid or biphasic.

If mesothelioma does not have spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide a curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and may recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy on its own.
