Refusal Interviews

A key question of pragmatic research is why learners are hesitant to adhere to pragmatic norms that native speakers use. They also referred to external factors like relational benefits. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors helped facilitate more relaxed performance in relation to the intercultural and linguistic rules of their university.

However, the interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and punishments they could be subject to if they violated their social norms. They were concerned that their native friends would perceive them as "foreigners" and think they are incompetent. This worry was similar to that expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. Future researchers should consider reassessing the validity of these tests in various contexts and in particular situations. This will enable them to better understand how different cultural environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of L2 learners in the classroom and beyond.
