Item upgrades allow players to increase the level of equippable items like weapons or armor, as well trinkets above a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Costs

These can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.
Upgrading an item can cost gold or Dilithium according to the item upgrader type. In addition, some upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of crests or Flightstones required to upgrade an item varies on the gear's level and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level can be costly, especially when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.
Upgrades to items can alter the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size change its operative or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter the hand requirements. Some upgrades can change the appearance of a weapon.
Before deciding on a purchase, you should be aware of the cost of upgrading an item. Spend your gold on rare items, and not on items of the common or magic level. These aren't worth upgrading, and rare items will soon outclass them.
Ask your guild members for their opinions if you are unsure whether an upgrade is worthwhile. You might be able to find better upgrades at lower cost. Make sure to upgrade your equipment as quickly as you can because upgrades become more expensive as time passes. If you are unable to pay for the upgrade, it might be better to wait. This will allow you to maximize your potential in the game.
