How to Replace an audi etron key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially in the case of an Bosch model, like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi keyless go's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning.
