Upgrades can boost the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets to give a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. Upgrade components can only be used on equipment with a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before the component can be applied. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher tier version of an item will be available in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear, even if they're unsure of how much it will improve following a subsequent reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly, and there is a significant chance that the item could become obsolete or even break if it fails. Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced but Glyphs are the only upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without any restrictions. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and re-placed with a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.

There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools as well as through Faction Crypt raids. Every Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs You will have to attach them to your equipment. When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same type. The same armor can be transformed into a weapon or a shield when upgraded. The new item also has its own set bonus. This could be a problem, as it can make the item more expensive if you do not require it.
