Upgrades can sometimes increase the power of a piece and, sometimes, even add extras. The worth of these upgrades is determined by the tiers of gear, their requirements, and the number of random augmentations can be applied.
The most powerful racial Shield Razortail, for example, is usually upgraded to improve its lightning absorption capability in PvP and/or add additional defenses to missile-based designs in the PvM. This makes it more exchangeable over the unupgraded version.
Reroll Tokens
Reroll tokens can be used to reroll an acquired item like armor, weapon, or ring. This allows you to swap the item for another of the same type with an additional set of bonuses. Reroll tokens can be an economical method of upgrading equipment. However, they don't keep the same level as the original item upgrader mod, and any wasted resources will not be refunded.

Blueprints are envelopes that appear at the beginning of every preparation phase. They can be opened using Interact by pressing on them. The process will consume upgrade materials and grant the best item Upgrade a higher level, granting the item an additional boost in the area. This process continues until the item is at its highest level.
Items with upgraded base stats display the blue icon in their slot. Contrary to enchantments upgrade components do not stack with one another, and can only be added to one item at a time. Additionally each upgrade component will require a particular number of items to be applied and an initial amount for the equipment.
The Upgrade Station features two slots: the left one is where players can add a piece of equipment that they wish to upgrade, and the right shows a preview of what the equipment will appear like when it reaches its next level. They can be bought from vendors, looted, or obtained through questing. They can also be traded between players. Upgrade components can be changed by acquiring new ones. However, this could destroy the old upgrade.
Requirements

Some items benefit from being upgraded not so much for their improved stats and more for the fact that it allows players to get the most value from a flawless roll on the item. For instance, a flawlessly rolled 200/6 504 armor set piece is highly sought-after in the melee PvP community and can be worth 20-50x more than the non-upp'd version.
The game will show you the requirements once you choose the upgrade component that goes into the item. The game will show the requirements required when you select an upgrade component to slot into an item.
