How to Replace an audi replacement car keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). 4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle.
