Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than previously recorded performances.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before.
